Morro Bay Bike Rentals

Our hope is to get everyone in the family out riding together.  We have a few types of child seats that mount to the back of our bikes, allowing infants up to 45 pounds to be securely buckled and seated.  Our next option is our bikes with buddy seats on the back. 

We have a few different models with a rear bench seat, pegs, and handlebar so that a child capable of holding on can tag join you as co-pilot on the back!!  See our Rad Wagon bike on our rental page for reference. These bikes can carry a combined 275 lbs or less with the rider and buddy.

At our shop, we require a minimum age of 14 yrs old / and a height of at least 4’11.  If members in your group are younger we do have a Rad Wagon and a few Rad Runners.  These bikes have a bench seat on the back, allowing kids 5 years old to 12 to ride on the back to ensure the entire family can rent a bike in Morro Bay or take a tour along the coast.

Morro Bay has several bike paths and routes; however, to access them from our shop, you must ride on shared roads with traffic. For that reason, we have set the minimum age to 14.

Electric bikes typically allow the rider to access the motor in 1 or 2 different ways.  The most common way an electric bike helps is by providing an assist as you turn the pedals with your feet.  Depending on the setting you select, the bike will help you only a little bit or enough to climb the steepest hills in town. 

The bike will not take off on its own or continue powering if you do not ask it to.  In this function, it will only assist if you move the pedals.  As soon as you stop rotating the pedals, the bike will coast like any other bike.  

The second function would be power from the electric motor by a twist grip, lever, or button.  This is called a throttle, just like a car or motorcycle.  The more you twist or push, the faster the motor goes, and as soon as you let off, the motor stops helping. This function is super fun, as you can ride around without moving your legs!

Some brands, like Rad Power Bikes, have both functions.

Electric bikes are essentially the same as regular bikes. The pedals, brakes, and handlebars are all the same. So balancing, stopping, and pedaling will be very similar to your bike at home. If you ride bikes often or did at some point, you should have no problem renting an electric bike in Morro Bay. 

If you have only ridden a bike a few times and it has been several years since the last time you tried, riding an electric bike would not be the best choice to get started again. On average, electric bikes weigh 60% more than a non-electric bike because of the battery, motor, and more robust bike frame.  Riding a bike that weighs more takes slightly more skill.

Another factor to consider is an electric bike can easily go 20mph.  Since most people can not pedal themselves up to 20 mph without a motor, the speed that an electric bike can allow riders must be handled responsibly.  The average cyclist is unaware of how much time you need to brake or the skill you need to avoid hazards at that speed.  For these reasons, electric bikes can be more dangerous if the rider is not responsible.  At our Morro Bay bike rental shop we assess our renters abilities and traffic awareness in an effort to keep our riders safe.
